The 1984 Star All-Star Game set has 25 cards covering the players in the 34th NBA All-Star Game, played in Denver on January 29, 1984: a checklist card, then the East All-Stars on #2-13 and the West on #14-25. It is Star's second All-Star set, and Basketball Gold says it and the Denver Police set are "loaded with great stars," among them Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, Julius Erving, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and game MVP Isiah Thomas.

The game
The East won 154-145 in overtime at McNichols Sports Arena. Isiah Thomas was named MVP with 21 points and 15 assists, Magic Johnson set an All-Star record with 22 assists, and Julius Erving scored 34. The set follows the rosters with one gap: Moses Malone, an East starter, missed the game injured and has no card, while Bill Laimbeer, who replaced him, is #6. Isiah appears twice, on the #1 checklist and on #11. The night before, Larry Nance won the first NBA Slam Dunk Contest, which Star covered in its own 1984 Slam Dunk set.
How the set was made
Star, Robert Levin's small Pennsylvania company, held the NBA license from 1983 to 1986 and sold most of its cards in sealed polybags, one team or subset per bag. starbasketballcards.com notes that this set came in a polybag, where the 1983 All-Star set had a cellophane wrapper, and that it dropped the 1983 set's special MVP, record and all-time-leader cards. Sports Collectors Daily says it was issued late in 1984.
The same fronts were used twice. Basketball Gold: the set "has exactly the same front photos as the 1984 All-Star Game Denver Police set." The Police set, 34 cards with youth safety tips on the backs for local law enforcement to hand out, combines this set with the Slam Dunk set, minus two Slam Dunk cards: the group-photo checklist and the Larry Nance Slam Dunk Champion card. A card with a police tip on the back is the Police set, not this one.
What collectors should know
- Condition: Basketball Gold says the All-Star set "seems to be in better condition" than the Denver Police set, where centering is a major problem.
- Rookie labels: sellers sometimes tag cards here RC. Basketball Gold's rule is that each player has only one Star rookie card, and none is in this set; Isiah Thomas's first card is the 1983 All-Star Game #11, and Ralph Sampson's #23 here comes from his rookie season but is not his rookie card.
- Fakes: it is not one of the Type II sets (those are limited to 1985-86 #95-172, the 1986 Jordan set and 1986 Best of the New), and it was not among the sets remade for Shop at Home in 1997.
- Grading: BGS has graded Star since December 2008. PSA added the set in March 2023 as "1984 Star All Stars," separate from the Denver Police set. CGC began grading 1980s Star in May 2025; its announcement publishes no set list.
The key cards
- #2 Larry Bird and #21 Magic Johnson: the set's best cards, according to Sports Collectors Daily.
- #4 Julius Erving: with Bird and Magic, one of the three most valuable cards by starbasketballcards.com's count.
- #1 and #11 Isiah Thomas: the game's MVP, twice.
- #14 Kareem Abdul-Jabbar: leads a West run that also includes George Gervin, Alex English and Adrian Dantley.
