The 1985 Star Team Supers 5x7 set has 40 oversized cards covering seven teams: five cards each for the Celtics, Bulls, Pistons, Rockets, Lakers and Bucks, and ten for the 76ers, sold one team to a bag. The Bulls bag has Michael Jordan on top. With Jordan, Akeem Olajuwon and Charles Barkley it holds 1985 cards of three of the 1984 draft's big names, plus Bird, Magic, Kareem, Erving and Isiah Thomas.

How the set was made
Star, Robert Levin's small Pennsylvania company, held the NBA license from 1983 to 1986. The Team Supers are one of its 5x7 issues, with the 1984 Blazers Mr. Z's, the 1984-85 Court Kings and the 1985 Slam Dunk Supers. starbasketballcards.com says the cards "were sold at local arenas during the 1985 season"; Basketball Gold says nothing about distribution, and no source gives a release month. The fronts have "STAR '85" at top left, a solid color border that changes by team, the team logo in a white circle at lower left and the player's name over his position and team. The backs carry the number, team logo, name, position, and only four lines of data: born, height, weight and years of NBA service. There are no stats.
Basketball Gold estimates 5,000 of each team set; starbasketballcards.com says 5,000 sets. All Vintage Cards has described a 25-card uncut sheet holding the 76ers, Bulls, Celtics and Bucks cards, which its consignor said was one of three known. The gallery below shows one, along with the sheet that carries the other 15 cards, the Pistons, Rockets and Lakers, printed with the Slam Dunk Supers.
What collectors should know
- Condition: Basketball Gold says, of the Court Kings bag, that centering is less of a worry on the 5x7s but the top card of a bag often picks up surface marks and corner or edge damage; here the top card is the Jordan.
- Sealed bags: an original sealed bag proves the cards are original, not that they are mint; you can't see the centering or surfaces of the cards underneath. Resealed Star bags exist, and a GAI bag grade rates the plastic and seals, not the cards.
- Not rookie cards: dealers often list the Jordan, Olajuwon and Barkley as rookies. Basketball Gold's rule is that a subset card can't be a rookie card when the player has a base-set card, and it records a Team Supers Jordan listed as a rookie "rarer than the #101" as a listing with two misrepresentations. Their rookie cards are 1984-85 Star #101, #237 and #202.
- Fakes: it is not one of the Type II sets (those are limited to 1985-86 #95-172, the 1986 Jordan set and 1986 Best of the New), and it was not among the sets remade for Shop at Home in 1997 (the Court Kings and Gatorade sets were).
- Grading: BGS has graded Star since December 2008 and labels the cards "1985 Star Team Supers 5x7 #CB1" and so on; GAI slabs exist too. PSA added the set in March 2023 as "1985 Star Team Supers 5x7." CGC began grading 1980s Star in May 2025; its announcement publishes no set list.
The key cards
- CB1 Michael Jordan: one of his three Star 5x7s, printed "Forward" on the front, and the one Basketball Gold calls the least popular of the three. It sits on top of the Bulls bag.
- HR2 Akeem Olajuwon and PS8 Charles Barkley: 1985 cards of the two other Hall of Famers from the 1984 draft, Barkley on the white-bordered 76ers card.
- BC1 Larry Bird, LA2 Magic Johnson, LA1 Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, PS1 Julius Erving, DP1 Isiah Thomas: each leads his team's set.
