The 1986 Star Lifebuoy Bucks set has 13 cards: coach Don Nelson and twelve players from the 1985-86 Milwaukee Bucks. It is one of two team sets Star made with Lifebuoy, Lever Brothers' soap brand; the other is the 1986 Lifebuoy Nets. Sidney Moncrief, Terry Cummings and Ricky Pierce carry the set, and #13 Jerry Reynolds comes from his rookie season.

How the set was made
Star, Robert Levin's small Pennsylvania company, held the NBA license from 1983 to 1986 and sold most of its cards in sealed polybags, one team or subset per bag. Basketball Gold files the two Lifebuoy sets under its specialized sets.
The cards themselves carry the sponsorship. The fronts have lime green borders, "STAR '86" at top right and a round Lifebuoy logo at bottom left, with the player's name and "Milwaukee Bucks" beneath the photo. The backs are printed in black on white: the card number in "3 of 13" form, the NBA Players Association logo, a Lifebuoy logo, a short biography (birthplace, height, weight, school, college and draft) and an NBA regular-season record running through 1984-85, with copyright lines for L.P., Inc. and The Star Co. dated 1984. There are no safety tips or ads on the backs, just the logo.
How the cards reached fans is not recorded. Basketball Gold's page for the set has no write-up, starbasketballcards.com doesn't say, and no other source we found describes a giveaway, store promotion or mail-in offer. If you know, tell us.
What collectors should know
- Dating: the fronts say "STAR '86" and the stats on the backs end with 1984-85, so the cards come from the 1985-86 season. You will see the set listed as 1986 (Basketball Gold, starbasketballcards.com) and as 1985-86 (TCDB).
- Fakes: it is not one of the Type II sets (those are limited to 1985-86 #95-172, the 1986 Jordan set and 1986 Best of the New), and it was not among the ten sets remade for Shop at Home in 1997.
- Grading: BGS has graded Star since December 2008, promotional sets included. PSA added "1986 Star Bucks Lifebuoy" to its eligible sets in March 2023. CGC began grading 1980s Star in May 2025; its announcement publishes no set list.
The key cards
- #10 Sidney Moncrief, #3 Terry Cummings and #11 Ricky Pierce: the set's star power, by starbasketballcards.com's count.
- #3 Terry Cummings: Basketball Gold notes that Fleer used the same photo on Cummings' 1986-87 Fleer #20 rookie card.
- #13 Jerry Reynolds: the Bucks drafted him in 1985, so this card comes from his rookie season; it is the earliest card TCDB lists for him.
- #1 Don Nelson: the Bucks' coach, also in the 1985 Star Coaches set.
