The 1983-84 Star Sixers Champs set has 25 cards and tells the story of the 1983 NBA Finals, Philadelphia's four-game sweep of the Lakers. It is the first of Star's three championship sets, ahead of the 1984 Celtics Champs and the 1985-86 Lakers Champs. Julius Erving is on five cards, Moses Malone on six, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar turns up on #3.

How the set was made

Star, Robert Levin's small Pennsylvania company, held the NBA license from 1983 to 1986 and sold most of its cards in sealed polybags, one team or subset per bag. Basketball Gold calls the Sixers Champs "the first of these subsets," part of a run in which Star commemorated the champion three years in a row. Beckett dates the release to late summer 1983; the fronts carry the "STAR '84" logo at top right. starbasketballcards.com describes the backs as plainer than usual for Star.

Beckett says most of the distribution was done at the Spectrum, the 76ers' home arena, and starbasketballcards.com says the same. Print-run estimates agree for once: Basketball Gold, Beckett and starbasketballcards.com all put it at about 10,000, double Basketball Gold's 5,000 for the Celtics and Lakers Champs sets.

What collectors should know

  • Fakes: it is not one of the Type II sets (those are limited to 1985-86 #95-172, the 1986 Jordan set and 1986 Best of the New).
  • Uncut sheets: the sheet in the gallery below prints two Sixers Champs sets alongside the 1983-84 All-Rookies.
  • Grading: BGS has graded Star since December 2008. PSA added the set in March 2023 as "1983-84 Star Sixers Champions." CGC began grading 1980s Star in May 2025; its announcement publishes no set list.

The key cards

  • Julius Erving: five cards (#4, #10, #18, #22 and #24), as counted by Basketball Gold.
  • #25 Moses Malone, Finals MVP: the set's closing card. starbasketballcards.com notes the same image was reused in the 1985 Crunch 'N Munch set.
  • #3 Clash of the Titans: Malone against Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, the set's only Kareem.
