How the set was made

Star sold the set complete, all 18 cards in one sealed polybag with the #1 checklist card on top; the full checklist is printed on its back. The fronts have green borders, a Celtics logo and "STAR '84." The cards cover his 1984 MVP season and the Celtics' 1984 title.

Basketball Gold estimates 10,000 sets were made, twice its estimate for the Erving, Kareem and Jordan sets (5,000 each). Like other Star issues it was printed on large sheets: the sheet in the gallery below, from Steve Ohsuree's collection, has the Bird set in its bottom two rows, under Star's 1984 Steve Garvey and Darryl Strawberry baseball sets.

What collectors should know

Sealed bags: an original bag has the #1 checklist on top. A sealed bag proves the cards are original, not that they are mint, and the top card takes the most handling.
Fakes: we know of no counterfeits of this set, and it is not one of the Type II sets (those are limited to 1985-86 #95-172, the 1986 Jordan set and 1986 Best of the New).
Grading: BGS has graded Star since December 2008 and labels the set "1984 Star Larry Bird." PSA added the set in March 2023, so graded copies from before then are mostly BGS, SCD or GAI.

#16 Career Data: Bird with Robert Parish, both in East All-Star uniforms. BGS labels it "Bird/Parish."
#2 Collegiate Stats: the college card by title, but the photo shows Bird as a Celtic, not at Indiana State.
#12 1984 NBA MVP: marks the first of his three straight MVP awards, won the season the set was made.
